Korean entertainer Rain in his personal message to fans [Official website]

Korean superstar Rain has announced that he will be returning to the K-pop music scene with a new album next month.

The singer posted a message on his official website (www.rain-jihoon.com) on Monday, telling fans that he will be releasing a special album containing several new songs he had “been cherishing for a while” on April 1.

He said he will promote the album for two months as well as including performances of the new tracks in his concert tours this year.

The multi-talented entertainer explained that he will be able to work on his music career for the time being since his “new film and drama have been delayed” and is “very happy to be able to show fans fantastic performances.”

He further revealed that he is planning to “show more of [his] personal side” in his upcoming television dramas and movies, unlike the “sort of serious stories” he had recently taken on.

Rain also informed fans that idol group MBLAQ, whom he created and trained as producer under his company label J. Tune Camp, will soon be coming out with a second single album.

He ended the message asking for their support and thanking them several times.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, started his career as a trainee at Korea’s major talent agency JYP Entertainment in 2002. He quickly gained fame throughout Asia, releasing five albums in Korea and starring in hit televisions dramas including “Full House” and “Sang Doo! Let’s Go To School”.

In 2008, he made his Hollywood debut in the Wachowski Brothers’ action flick “Speed Racer”, which led to his star turn in the martial arts movie “Ninja Assassin” last year.

[KPOP] COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF RAIN’S CONCERT CANCELLATION

Asian superstar Rain [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]

A South Korean court has ruled that singer and actor Rain is not responsible for the cancellation of concerts in the U.S. leg of his world tour between 2006 and 2007.Local concert promoter Star M had filed a lawsuit against Rain and his then-agency JYP Entertainment last March, claiming 4.57 billion won, or nearly four million dollars, in compensation for losses and damages they allegedly suffered from 16 cancelled shows. The Seoul Central District Court said in its ruling Thursday that the concert was cancelled due to lack of preparations on part of the promoter and the issues it had with U.S.-based promoting firm Revolution Entertainment. The court also stated that JYP’s contract with Chinese talenthouse DR Music had not interfered with Rain’s shows planned for China since it had ended before JYP signed with Star M. In its suit filed against the Asian superstar, Star M had argued Rain’s concerts in China could not take place as scheduled due to JYP’s failure to settle its relationship with DR, which at the time being managed Rain’s music career in China. The company had also claimed they had purchased the exclusive rights to host the tour but Rain abruptly cancelled more than half of a total 35 shows due to a copyright problem over the singer’s stage name. Star M said the problem arose soon after they signed the contract but they had not been notified of the issue beforehand. Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, had been unable to perform with his stage name in America because of a copyright challenge from a Beatles tribute band named “Rain.”Rain’s current talenthouse J.Tune Entertainment and JYP welcomed the court’s ruling, declaring through a press release that it would take strong legal action against Star M including demanding compensation for the damages it has incurred on both agencies. The ruling comes over half a year since Rain settled another lawsuit over his troubled U.S. tour. The Hawaiian Court had ruled in March last year that the Asian superstar pay eight million dollars for failing to perform at a concert in Honolulu in 2007, the first stop of the tour. An agreement was reached in June, although details were not disclosed.Rain, 27, has been one of the most successful celebrities in the entertainment industry since his debut in 2002. His singing career has gained him massive popularity throughout Asia and he also appeared in several movies and TV series. He recently starred in Wachowski Brothers production “Ninja Assassin”, which opened in theaters in late November.Jessica Kim jesskim@asiae.co.kr<ⓒ10Asia All rights reserved>

[KPOP] RAIN’S MBLAQ GAINS POPULARITY IN JAPAN

Korean idol group MBLAQ [J. Tune Camp]

Korean idol group MBLAQ’s popularity in Japan and Korea has been on the rise since their performance at Rain’s Osaka concert over the weekend, according to a press release by their agency on Wednesday. The quintet’s opening performance at the “Legend of Rainism” tour on January 23 and 24 caught the attention of major record company executives in Japan, J. Tune Camp said in the statement. “We are discussing the [contract] terms in detail with several companies,” an official at J. Tune was quoted as saying. “We will work out the best possible terms and prepare their Japanese debut step by step.”Their increasing popularity appears to have carried over to Korea as well; the group has been racking up album sales in Korea, according to estimates released today by Hanteo Chart — which uses a sampling method to predict online and offline record sales in the country. For the week of January 19 thru 25, the group’s first single “Just Blaq” sold 2,267 copies, ranking third in weekly album sales behind boy bands TVXQ and CNBLUE. The feat may be regarded as unusual, considering it was released three months ago and the group is currently on a break, preparing to come out with a new single. MBLAQ — which stands for “Music Boys Live in Absolute Quality” — was created and trained by Asian superstar Rain for two years. They debuted in October 2009 as the first group that Rain introduced to the public since he turned producer. Singer Rain gives a shocking confession about group MBLAQ groomed personally by himself as his “first and last producing.”

Rain had a fanmeeting ‘Rain on Christmas’ on 17th December in Seoul KangNamGoo with readers of HighCut magazine. He said, “Perhaps, these friends (MBLAQ) will be the first and last that I will produce. I just want to give hope to these kids. I have been through times when I want to dance but I have no money and can’t do so. Now I’m just giving my help to these kids.”

He continued, “The road that I’ll walk is still very far. As an actor, I still have many to improve on, and as a singer I still need to work harder to do better. I still have so far to go, and who am I teaching now? If MBLAQ does well, doesn’t mean that I can produced out other kids too?” and spoke with hope.

He ended, “First, I want to concentrate on these friends (MBLAQ), and then concentrate on myself” expressing the wish to mature as an entertainer. But he continued, “But then again, you would know. I may just change my mind some day.”
