[KPOP] EPIK HIGH AND F(x) PERFORMED AT CANNES MUSIC SHOWCASE

Korean band Epik High performs at “K-pop Night” showcase at MIDEM 2010 [Korea Creative Content Agency]

Korean hip-hop group Epik High and girl band f(x) performed as representatives of Korean pop music at a global music showcase in Cannes held this week, according to a press release by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA).

Epik High and f(x) performed for about 90 minutes on “K-Pop Night” event — held January 26 at Hotel Martinez in Cannes, France — in front of music and media industry executives at MIDEM 2010, KOCCA explained in the statement released yesterday.

“I felt a connection with many of the attendees despite our different nationalities and age,” Tablo of Epik High was quoted as saying. “It was an amazing, entertaining performance.”

“I was surprised that so many people showed up,” said f(x) member Sulli about the performance. “We are grateful for their enormous support and in a few years, we hope to hold our solo concert in many countries overseas.”

The two groups drew a lot of interest from local journalists and record companies. Agency SM Entertainment explained that the girl band received numerous inquiries and offers from some 20 companies, including Warner Music Sweden, about making an European debut. Epik High was also approached by an agent, who manages U.S. hip-hop artist Pitbull, to write songs and by an Australian record distribution firm Timeless Music Company who offered to distribute the group’s music both online and offline.

MIDEM (Marche International du Disque et de l’Edition Musicale) is an annual, global music trade fair which is hosted by French media group Reed Midem and attended by record companies and distributors from all over the world. This year, it was held from January 24 thru 27 at Palais des Festivals et des Congres in Cannes, France.

Epik High — composed of Tablo, Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz — debuted in 2003 with the album “Map of the Human Soul” and gained popularity with the success of their consequent albums “High Society” and “Swan Songs”. The group released their sixth album “[e]” in September 2009.

f(x) — composed of Victoria, Amber, Luna, Sulli and Krystal — debuted last September with the single “LA chA TA”. Their latest single “Chu~♡” has made the Top 20 singles chart in Korea.

[KPOP] F(x) SAYS THEY’RE GOING TO BE ASIA’S BEST POP-DANCE GROUP

SM Entertainment, the source of top idol groups Super Junior, Girl’s Generation, and SHINee, has a new ambition: f(x), a group with powerful dance moves and trendy pop-music inclinations, which has placed itself as a strong new contender on the music foreground. With leader Victoria, members Krystal, Amer, Sulli, and Luna form the five-member girl group f(x), which debuted last September with its song ‘LAchATA,’ receiving much love for its cute and appealing image.

At the question regarding the latest hot issue circling music idol groups, the ‘i-dol’ nicknames such as “Animal-dol, Chic-dol, Luxury-dol,” and what they would want for themselves, f(x) replies with, “Oh? We haven’t thought about it. What would be good?” “Personality-dol? Function-dol? Baby-dol?” (tn: Bear with me. These “i-dol” words make more sense in Korean…) accompanied by much laughter, eventually saying “We’ll think about it some more before giving you an answer” with cute smiles.

Even though they appear to be no different from other teens with their playful behavior, when asked what their goal is, the answer “We’re going to be the best pop-dance group in Asia” reveals the bold ambitions of these passionate artists.

I can’t live without a mirror! ‘Mirror Princess’ Luna

Like other girls in their age group, f(x) also pays a lot of attention to their appearance. When asked who pays the most attention to their looks, the members’ sights all focus on one person – Luna.

“Since we’re all girls, we like to get dressed up, but the person that loves to look in the mirror is Luna-unni. Mirror Princess,” says Sulli, revealing how Luna spends more time in front of the mirror than anyone else. “It’s not that she primps in the mirror. It’s more like she glances in it a lot,” adds Krystal with a careful glance at Luna.

Krystal is indecisive?

An idol’s ideal type is always the top question for fans. When asked who the ideal types for f(x) are, Sulli answers that rather than pick a certain someone, “I like a person that makes me think ‘This person is like me.'” For Luna, “I think a person that is dedicated to their work is really impressive.”

As her turn approached, Krystal alone begins to worry. “Oh? Who’s mine? It changes from time to time.” She says, “I like Kang Dongwon-ssi, and I feel a closeness to “God of Study”‘s Lee Hyunwoo-goon because he’s like a friend.” “I don’t think I have an ideal type,” she eventually says with a smile.

I really like cookies! Wacky appeal Amber

f(x)’s Chinese-American member Amber, relates how there are “too many” episodes that come from her still-rough knowledge of Korean. Beside her, Luna can’t hold back her laugh and reveals “When it’s time to go on stage, we say “f(x), let’s go!” and Amber says “Cookies? What cookies?” and doesn’t really understand,” showing Amber’s unexpected wacky side. (tn: Let’s go = ga-ja “가자”, Cookies = gwa-ja “과자”)

At Luna’s words, the members break into laughter. “It’s because Amber likes cookies so much.” “She eats cookies like rice.” And the conversation changes topics completely. At this, Amber admits, “They’re right. Chips, cookies, chocolate, I love all of that stuff. If I eat cookies, I don’t gain weight, but if I eat rice, I do,” with a shy grin.

Sulli: “If was I picked as an ideal type? I would be so happy”

In the drama “Sudongyo,” playing Sunhwa princess Lee Bo-young’s child-actor and receiving much love, Sulli. Her clear visage and clear skin. The way her eyes curve into adorable crescents when she smiles is her charm. The ones that fall for her charms aren’t limited to fans.

Sulli, recently, has been picked by Big Bang’s G-Dragon, Chun Myunghoon, and U-kiss’s Kibum, among other stars, as their ideal types. “Just the fact that they think I’m cute is enough for me to be thankful. It makes me feel so happy that they like me and think so well of me,” she says about her feelings towards being chosen as the ideal type, smiling as though embarrassed by the attention.

Victoria, “The secret to flexibility is healthy food”

When asked “Out of f(x), who pays the most attention to her health?” the members all join together to point out Victoria. “The one that looks for the healthiest food is Victoria-unni. None of the other members can drink honey-water, but unni drinks it by herself like it’s really tasty,” Luna explains first.

“Since we’re living in a dorm, we can’t really take medicine when we should, but unni really keeps on top of it,” adds Sulli. At that, Victoria admits right away that “When I don’t feel good and my condition’s bad, instead of eating, I pay more attention to medicine.”

[KPOP] TOP KPOP IDOLS UNITE ON SBS MUSIC FESTIVAL

South Korea’s top idol groups and singers attend e year-end SBS Music Festival held at KINTEX in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea on December 29, 2009. [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]

Singers undoubtedly become the busiest people in the entertainment industry at the end of every year with the variety of performances they have to prepare both individually and in collaboration with other artists for awards ceremonies of each broadcaster. On set of the SBS Music Festival on December 29, these artists and the show’s producers, who had already given up on about three days worth of sleep, put up their last fight into a camera rehearsal just hours ahead of the event’s actual airing.

As Super Junior member Hee-chul, who had transformed into Girls’ Generation member Jessica for song “Gee”, comes back to take his position as emcee, co-show host Jung Yong-hwa praises him saying, “You look good disguised in a girl, very pretty.” To this, Heechul chicly answers, “Yes, but even this beauty will turn 28 next year,” taking the young and less experienced Jung by surprise. Yet soon Heechul shows his warm side by explaining to Jung his position and organizing his comments for the show. Hyoyeon of Girls’ Generation too takes care of her juniors Krystal and Amber from girl group f(x), checking meticulously whether they are correctly performing the dance moves to SHINee’s “Ring Ding Dong”. Former idol group singer Kim Tae-woo livens up the atmosphere by warmly greeting the young singers who appear on set.

Of course, it is not only the senior singers looking out for their juniors. 2PM member Chansung who was prepping for a partial recorded segment of the show, places his fellow singer Wooyoung in front of him and repeatedly shows him the new choreography they are set to sing on the show. Wooyoung, who had been listening intently to Chansung’s directions, turns around to face the wall and starts rehearsing the moves.

9:55 P.M. The show goes on air. SHINee member Onew, who was imitating the choreography of T-ara’s “Bo Peep Bo Peep” in a space arranged separately for the singers next to the stage, gladly greets and repositions himself next to 2PM member Nichkhun who takes his own seat. Super Junior’s Shindong, who had been immersed in singing along to Davichi’s “A Friend’s Confession,” transforms into a member of what looks like the choir from film “Sister Act” when the girl duo starts singing “8282”. Shindong, alongside Lee Teuk and Sungmin, start dancing and singing to the song with Yesung as the conductor. 2AM member Jinwoon returns to his seat after watching boy band 2PM’s first-ever performance of their song “Tired of Waiting”. Park Jin-young, the eldest amongst the singers at 38-years-old, reenacts his hit 90s song “Don’t Leave Me” with surprisingly swift moves and without doubt, of all the male idol singers who follow the dance moves to Girls’ Generation’s “Genie”, the best is 2AM leader Jo Kwon. While the video for “Gee” plays on screen, Super Junior members Heechul, Lee Teuk and Sungmin as well as SHINee members Minho and Taemin go up and stage to say hello to their fans and Siwon, also known as ‘Girls’ Generation’s CEO’, claps like a CEO with the most solemn look on his face. There was no ‘No. 1’ or popularity vote during the 200 minute-long show — everyone was a winner at the SBS Music Festival.

[KPOP] F(x)’s AMBER EXPOSED INTENTIONS ON HER NEUTRAL IMAGE

Posted Image

f(x)’s Amber exposed her intentions about her neutral image.

Through an interview with Newsen, on the 16th, Amber hinted that there was not any discontent about her neutral, masculine image. Amber explained, “Honestly I would like to show this image more” Also “This is not an image that was processed. Ever since I was young, I have liked the boyish style. This image is a very natural look for me”

Amber has received explosive interest before her debut due to her masculine style and neutral charms. Also out of all the members, Amber has the most female fans because of her unique charms.

Members Luna and Krystal thought back and said “The first time we saw Amber we thought she was a boy, and we were surprised” Also “It is because she has always lived with a boyish appearance”.
Sulli said, “Unlike the other members, I have lived in the same dorm as Amber, so I was not really surprised, but the first time I saw Amber I had many thoughts that she was a male.”

The f(x) members spoke highly of Amber by saying “Since Amber has lived in America, there must have been a lot of unfamiliar instances while having activities in Korea”. Also “She is a member that works very hard. Also her Korean skills have improved a lot compared to back then. She is a member that changes every day.”

On the other hand, f(x) is gaining a lot of popularity with their title song ‘Chu~♡’ from their recently released first single album. ‘Chu~♡’ is a euro pop dance song with drum sounds that shows off its powerful charms.

The title ‘Chu~♡’ expresses the sounds of a kiss, and the song itself is about the main character waking up in a fairy-tale like motif through a kiss, and the curiosity filled girl wants to know more about the world.
