The all-girl K-pop group Girls Generation (aka SNSD) and “Beastly Idols” 2PM dominated the Korean music scene in 2009 and emerged as top idol groups, according to a survey and a ranking by a TV show.

In a ranking by a program on Korean TV station MBC, Girls Generation emerged as the number one singing group in Korea.

Girls Generation dominated the first half of the year with their song “Gee.” It ruled on “Music Bank,” a Korean music program on KBS TV station, for nine consecutive weeks—a record for a Korean artist. The song also started a dance craze in Korea.

Hot on the heels of Girls Generation was the Brown Eyed Girls followed by 2PM, Baek Ji Young, Super Junior, Infinity Challenge, 2NE1, G-Dragon, SHINee, Jang Ki Ha and the Faces, Kara, f(x), Kim Tae Woo, 4Minute and Norazo.

On the other hand, producers of entertainment programs in Korea picked 2PM as the best artist for 2009.

The survey was done among 22 producers of entertainment shows from the top three Korean TV stations MBC, KBS and SBS.

2PM got nine votes followed by Girls Generation with five votes, 2NE1 with three, Brown Eyed Girls with two and Kara and Big Bang with one vote each. 2PM generated a lot of buzz with their song “Again and Again.”

In the song of the year category, “Gee” by Girls Generation was named top pick with seven votes followed by “Abracadabra” by BEG with six and 2NE1’s “I Don’t Care” with three.

2PM also garnered the male artist of the year award with 17 votes while G-Dragon of Big Bang was second with three votes. Super Junior and Big Bang got one vote each.

Girls Generation was chosen as female artist of the year with 11 votes. 2NE1 was second with seven, Brown Eyed Girls with three and Kara with one vote.

2NE1 was picked as rookie of the year with 13 votes followed by After School with seven votes.

The emergence of girl groups in Korea was voted as the hottest issue of the year followed by the departure of Park Jaebum as leader of boy band 2PM.

Girls Generation is composed of Taeyeon, Jessica, Yoona, Tiffany, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, Seohyun, and Sunny.

On the other hand, 2PM is composed of Wooyoung, Nichkhun, Junsu, Junho, Taecyeon, and Chansung. Its leader, Jaebum, is on hiatus.
